The Rolex copywriting hack for beginners

Last week, I was on a podcast with Harrison who runs @SaveYourSons (584K Followers).

We were talking about building businesses as busy fathers and he asked:

“How did you know your first business was going to take off like a rocket?”

    FOR CONTEXT

He was talking about Bearded Boards — a guitar pedalboard company I launched and grew to multi-six figures in 12 months (this was a decade ago)

    My honest answer…

I didn’t know it was going to take off!

But looking back, I can tell you why that business won (even though I made hundreds of beginner mistakes).

Because I created a product people ALREADY WANTED.

    I cannot stress this enough.

As an email copywriter, the hardest thing you can do is write copy to sell stuff people don’t already want.

    Thanks, Captain Obvious 🏴‍☠️

    Here’s what I mean…

I sold Guitar Pedalboards — something guitarists desire to have in their collection for fun!

But If you’d ask me to write copy for Roof Installations, I’d say, “Not for me, amigo!”

“bUt WhY!? ThEre Is A NeEd! PeOpLe BuY iT!”

Yes, but people don’t want it.

People aren’t sitting up at night dreaming about their roof.

They’re up at night dreaming about watches, cars, guitars, sneakers, video games, iPhones…

This is a massive hack for beginner copywriters especially!

If I were you and writing copy for myself or clients, I would ask these questions:

    1. Do people want this product?
    2. If so, why do they want it?
    3. What’s stopping them from buying it?

Then write your copy around those things.

Find a company that’s selling the products you know people want and write emails for them.

    Hope this helps.

    Until tomorrow – your friend,

P.S. I am writing sample ads for Rolex right now. I’m going to show them how I could help them sell more watches via email.

You see how I picked a product people already want? =)
